The 2nd son of Nelson and Linnie Robertshaw, named John Raby (the Raby middle name coming from his mother’s maiden name), was born in Ontario, Canada in 1881. Just a scant three years later, he and his family moved south west to Port Huron, Michigan. John eventually took up the carpentry trade and worked with his father and older brother. In 1902, while still in Port Huron, he married Meta Marie Emilie Lietz (b. 1886 in Detroit, Michigan). The wedding made the Port Huron Daily Times Herald newspaper (12 Sept 1902).
John had made the newspaper once before, back in 1892, when he was involved in a shooting accident.
John and May (as she was known), made their residence in Detroit, where there was plenty of work for carpenters and builders.
As John became an older man, he found that the carpentry trade was a bit hard on him so he turned his house on 12th street into a bar - The 12th Street Tavern - and ran that until retirement age.
His wife, May, passed away in early 1956, while John lived until 1962.
John and May were my great grandparents.
